Albotherm, a company born from research at the University of Bristol, has raised £370k ($500k) in seed funding to develop its groundbreaking Variable Shading System. This innovative glass coating responds to temperature changes by reflecting sunlight, significantly reducing energy consumption for cooling in agriculture, homes, and commercial buildings—sectors expected to account for 13% of global energy use by 2050.
The coating transitions from clear to white at specific temperatures, passively regulating heat without the need for energy input. This sustainable technology addresses two major global challenges: reducing carbon emissions and enhancing food security by improving crop yields.
The funding round was led by Sustainable Ventures, through their Sustainable Accelerator programme, which supports high-growth, sustainability-driven start-ups. Albotherm is also backed by Spin Up Science Ventures (SUSV), an initiative that helps transform academic research into thriving businesses.
Susannah McClintock, Investment Director at Sustainable Ventures, remarked: “Albotherm’s innovative technology has immense potential to reduce emissions in agriculture and building energy efficiency. We’re especially proud to support their all-female founding team, aligning with our commitment to diversity in cleantech.”
Founded by Molly Allington (CEO) and Sian Fussell (CTO), Albotherm exemplifies how scientific innovation can drive sustainability. The co-founders met while conducting research at the University of Bristol, where they discovered a shared passion for creating solutions to global environmental challenges.
Sian Fussell, CTO, explained: “During my PhD, I became fascinated by the potential of this technology to combat climate change. It’s exciting to see it transition from research to a viable product.”
Molly Allington, CEO, added: “Our passive cooling technology has the power to tackle two critical challenges: reducing emissions and increasing food production. Partnering with Sustainable Ventures, Spin Up Science, and our investors marks an important step in our journey towards a more sustainable future.”
